How many nights Da Nang needs

Two nights covers the beach and the Marble Mountains comfortably. Three or four makes sense if you're adding a full day at Ba Na Hills — it eats most of a day on its own — or if the beach itself is the point of your trip rather than a stopover, since Da Nang's beaches genuinely reward a slower pace than a quick pass-through allows. It's also worth keeping a spare half-day in reserve if your dates fall near typhoon season, in case Ba Na Hills' cable car or a flight gets delayed by weather. Da Nang works well as a base for Hoi An day trips too, since it's only 30–45 minutes away and has the region's main airport, which is why a lot of travelers land here, split their nights between the two, and fly onward from Da Nang rather than backtracking.

Where to stay: My Khe Beach or the city center

My Khe Beach — the long stretch that runs along the east side of the city, regularly ranked among Vietnam's best beaches — is where most visitors base themselves. Beachfront and near-beachfront hotels run $25–45 for a solid 3-star, $60–120 for 4-star with a pool, and $150+ for the international resort chains at the northern end near Son Tra. It's a 10–15 minute Grab from most of the city's other sights.

The city center, along the Han River, trades beach access for walkability to the bridges, the night market, and a wider spread of local restaurants — hotels here run $18–35 for budget to mid-range options. Non Nuoc Beach, south near the Marble Mountains, is quieter than My Khe and where several of the larger luxury resorts have clustered, $130–280 a night.

What to eat, and what it should cost

Mì Quảng — turmeric-yellow noodles in a light broth with pork, shrimp, herbs, and a rice cracker on the side — is Da Nang's defining dish and different enough from phở to be worth actively seeking out; a bowl at a local spot is $1.50–2.50. Bánh tráng cuốn thịt heo (boiled pork wrapped in rice paper with herbs and a fermented shrimp dipping sauce) runs $3–5 for a full portion and is a Da Nang specialty distinct from what you'll find further south. Bún chả cá — fish cake noodle soup, lighter and sweeter than Hanoi's bún chả — is $1.50–2.50 at the morning stalls that do it best.

The beachfront strip along My Khe has a dense run of seafood restaurants with tanks out front — pick-your-own crab and prawns priced by the kilogram, generally $15–25/kg depending on the catch, split well between two or three people. It's a fair bit more than eating a few streets back, but it's a genuine Da Nang experience worth doing at least once.

Helio Night Market, near the river, is the better bet over the more tourist-oriented Sơn Trà Night Market for genuinely local prices — grilled skewers, fresh fruit, and cheap plastic-stool eating from about 5pm, most dishes $1–3. Da Nang's café scene leans more relaxed than Hanoi's — iced coffee here is often served with coconut milk (cà phê dừa) rather than condensed milk, $2–3 at the better-known spots along the river.

The three big sights, and what they actually cost

Marble Mountains, the cluster of five limestone and marble hills just south of the city, costs 40,000 VND (about $1.60) to enter, plus 15,000 VND (about $0.60) one-way if you take the elevator up rather than the stairs — worth it in the heat. Am Phu Cave, the "hell cave" with Buddhist and folklore carvings depicting the afterlife, is a separate 20,000 VND (about $0.80) ticket. Budget 1.5–2.5 hours here.

Ba Na Hills, the French colonial-style hill station with the Golden Bridge — the one held up by giant stone hands, now one of Vietnam's most photographed spots — is 1,000,000 VND (about $39) for the standard adult ticket, which includes the round-trip cable car (one of the longest in the world) and access to most of the complex. It's a full day trip from the city, and worth checking the weather before you go — fog regularly rolls in at altitude and can hide the views you're paying for.

The Dragon Bridge, which breathes fire and water at 9pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, is free to watch from either riverbank — no ticket needed, just show up 15–20 minutes early for a decent spot. The Lady Buddha statue on Son Tra Peninsula (67m tall, one of the tallest in Vietnam) is free to visit and pairs well with the peninsula's monkey-spotting drive if you have a scooter or hired car.

Best time to visit Da Nang

February to May is the best window — warm, dry, and before peak summer crowds hit the beach. June to August is hot and busy, particularly with domestic tourists on school holidays, which pushes up beachfront hotel prices. September to November carries real typhoon risk on the central coast — Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue all sit in the path of most storms that make landfall in this part of Vietnam, and flights or Ba Na Hills' cable car can be suspended with little notice if one is approaching. December and January are cooler and quieter, a reasonable trade-off if you don't mind occasionally overcast skies in exchange for lower hotel prices and thinner crowds at Marble Mountains.

Getting to and around Da Nang

Da Nang International Airport is central Vietnam's main gateway — 10–15 minutes from My Khe Beach or the city center by Grab or taxi, $4–7. It's the practical entry or exit point for a Hoi An/Hue/Da Nang cluster of stops rather than flying separately into each. Within the city, Grab covers everything; a ride from My Khe to the city center is $2–4, to Marble Mountains $4–6. A rented scooter, $5–8/day, is genuinely useful here for reaching Son Tra Peninsula's viewpoints, which public transport doesn't serve well.

Beyond the big three: Asia Park and the Cham Museum

Asia Park (Sun World Da Nang Wonders), on the west bank of the river, is a theme park with a large Ferris wheel and Asian-themed zones — worth a half-day if you're traveling with kids and want a break from temples and beaches, roughly $10–15 entry depending on which rides are included. The Museum of Cham Sculpture, in the city center, holds the country's best collection of Cham artifacts from the ancient kingdom that once controlled this stretch of coast — 60,000 VND (about $2.40) entry, and a worthwhile 40-minute stop if you're also visiting My Son near Hoi An, since it gives useful context for what you'll see there.

Common tourist-price traps to know about

Booking a Ba Na Hills tour through a street-side agency instead of buying the ticket directly (or through a platform like Klook, which lets you skip the ticket-window queue) sometimes adds a markup with no real benefit beyond transport, which you can also arrange separately and often more cheaply. At the Marble Mountains, informal "guides" who approach at the entrance and offer to show you around for a tip are not official — the site is well signposted and easy to navigate without one, though tipping for genuinely helpful information is a personal call.

On the seafood strip at My Khe, always confirm the per-kilogram price before your catch is weighed and cooked, not after — it's standard practice elsewhere to ask upfront, and the reputable places post prices clearly rather than making you ask.
